1 Right Answer To If You Should Have Multiple Facebook Accounts

W

Whoa is this topic about multiple Facebook accounts a hotly debated one! Is having multiple Facebook accounts the way to go? And this especially in the online entrepreneurship/internet marketing niche. To be totally honest, this is also one of the first questions I asked myself when I started my online business under the iSameerJoshi brand.

So, what is the RIGHT answer? Is there a right answer? As with everything, everyone has a very strong opinion about this. Be this marketer (irrespective of the level of success or experience), social media “gurus” etc. Even those who don’t have an opinion feel strongly about that fact that they don’t – or don’t need to – have one. As it turns out, Facebook itself ALSO has an opinion and a very clear one. So what is it? To find out…

First of all, and as with everything else on this blog, what I am stating here is purely based on what I have found out about multiple Facebook accounts. And, this after quite a bit of research and conversations with many people. This is also the basis of me forming the opinion I finally came to.

Watch this brief Live video I did at the time (on Facebook – talking of which, LOL) which gives you a brief overview of this blog post. You’ll get the most out of this post, however, only by reading it until the end. So, here goes…

Should I have Multiple Facebook Accounts?

This is one of the first questions I asked myself. And if you are an online entrepreneur (or aspiring to be one), you can surely relate to the thought process that I had at the time. This was when my Facebook connections started to grow exponentially. Naturally so as many, I was interacting with for my online business connected with me there.

The thought process was this:

  • “I have an account on Facebook. Almost everyone does. So, what’s the big deal?”
  • “It has all my personal friends on it in my Friends List. And the pictures of my last family vacation. And from the time my son was born. My spouse doesn’t want anyone else seeing our pictures. And she doesn’t fully understand this “online thing”, in any case. And….on and on and on”
  • “If I have all my “new” connections ALSO on there, then this is all going to get sooo messy. They’ll see stuff what (only) my personal friends should see. And my personal friends will get bombarded with all the online entrepreneurship stuff that I am posting. This is NOT GOOD.”
  • “I need to create another Facebook account. One which is DEDICATED to my online business and has friends ONLY related to it. No one else. This is the cleanest solution.”

Can you relate to this?

The Variety of Opinion

Ha! I thought I had cracked it. Easy enough. New account. Multiple Facebook Accounts is the way to go! That’s it. Then I heard a very tech-savvy mentor of mine talk about NOT doing this. Obviously, one listens to what the mentor has to say and does it, right?multiple facebook accounts

Wrong! Not immediately, at least. I wanted to find this out for myself. And then, the pain began.

I personally contacted – and received responses from – several millionaire marketers. And I asked “Should I have multiple Facebook accounts?” I noticed that they had strong differences in opinion. Seen from my perspective, the one faction had one opinion and the other one a totally different one. Yes, these are 7-figure business owners.

I was CONFUSED! Thoroughly!

The Other Account

Multiple Facebook Accounts seemed to be the way to go for me. And I went on to create a new account on behalf of my business (with the brand name associated with it etc.). make money online multiple facebook accountsI started reaching out to the ones who I was already friends with on the first account. Some wondered why I was “befriending” them “again”, others just “understood” and yet others probably didn’t think anything into this.

I also started getting to the new account a lot of friend requests for potential matrimonial associations from distant lands (LOL). I obviously shared such developments immediately with my lawfully wedded wife, who was, by now, as “ROFL” as she was furious) – those were sights to see. Let me tell you.

Other than the constant logging in and out, and the switching accounts / Messenger bit on the smartphone, this thing with the two accounts went relatively well, for a while. And as this is not in any policy violation of Facebook, there is a bit of a gray area here. This is since my name – and that of the business and brand – is the same (or very similar).

Facebook Community Guidelines

The turning point was revisiting the Terms and Community Guidelines of Facebook, and REALLY understanding what these mean in the context of multiple Facebook accounts.

Here’s what the Terms say:

4. Registration and Account Securitymultiple facebook accounts

Facebook users provide their real names and information, and we need your help to keep it that way. Here are some commitments you make to us relating to registering and maintaining the security of your account:

….

2. You will not create more than one personal account.

….

Well, ok, but mine’s not another personal account. It is an account directly related to my online business. Would this still apply, then?

Let’s look at what the Community Guidelines say when asked the question “Can I create multiple Facebook accounts?”

Facebook is a community where people use their authentic identities. It’s against the Facebook Community Standards to maintain more than one personal account.
If you want to represent your business, organization, brand or product on Facebook, you can use your personal account to create and manage a Page. Keep in mind that a personal profile is for non-commercial use and represents an individual person. Learn more about converting your profile to a Page.
If you’re using your profile to represent something other than yourself, you can convert it to a Page. And if you’re a public figure, learn about allowing followers.
If you have 2 or more accounts, learn how to move your information into a single account. …

Pretty clear. If you have a business (which has exactly the same – or a similar – name as your own), don’t create another account for it. Create a Page.

What I did

I didn’t take me a while – in fact, I decided instantly! I followed the guidelines exactly as outlined by Facebook about multiple Facebook accounts. As a result, gone was my “other” account after downloading and securing the information. I created what many think is a very nice multiple facebook accounts

While closing the account recently created, I wrote to Facebook. I stated my reason that I already have another account and have now fully understood their Community Guidelines about having multiple “personal” accounts. While my other account was not “personal”, I could easily be understood as one, hence I just want to be compliant.

The last line in the quotation from Facebook’s Community Rules also reveals that I am not the first (or last) person who has ventured into making this mistake.

What Others Might Think

I have heard many say that it is “wise” to have multiple Facebook accounts as many advertisers running campaigns for “big marketers” say that the “rules are inconsistent”. makemoneyonline multiple facebook accountsAnd that it can come down to the moods and whims of any employee within Facebook “looking at your account”. It is good to have “a backup plan”. I respectfully disagree with this opinion.

And I have many others say on this exact same topic that this is very valuable information. And very actionable, if relevant.

Either which way, it is your call as an online entrepreneur. I know that I would rather be on the right side of the rules and fight it out if I had to than being in the wrong. Maybe it’s my corporate executive background shining through in this mindset.

Corporations make rules for reasons often best known fully to themselves. We’ll never know exactly what goes on in the minds of the ones making these rules. Yet, once they are made and published, there is little sense in debating this.
